Several of UCEM’s academics have been involved in and recognised at two academic conferences over the last month.

On 28-29 August, Dr James Ritson and Dr Graeme Larsen both presented research at the 10th annual Sustainable Ecological Engineering Design for Society (SEEDS) conference, which was held at Leeds Beckett University.

Dr Ritson presented exciting research building upon his Harold Samuel Research Prize (HSRP) around Sustainability Implications of Hybrid Working, whilst Dr Larsen presented research conducted by himself and Dr Pippa Boyd on Sustainability Being Enacted by SMEs Across Rural Localised Settings.

Dr Boyd and Dr Larsen’s paper won a category award at the event, being ‘highly commended.’ As Dr Larsen commented:

“Our research focussed upon how regional SMEs in rural settings are trying to enact sustainability. We are thrilled to receive this award along with its associated recognition by the international academic sustainability community, further demonstrating UCEM’s growing profile in this key area.”

On 2-4 September, Dr Boyd attended the 40th annual Association of Researchers in Construction Management conference (ARCOM) as a committee member. She also served as a panel member on a discussion with leading journal editors, and presented her research at the conference on The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Student Academic Research Supervision.

At the conference, Dr Boyd’s research paper received the Emerald Publishing award for ‘Best Methodological Paper’ at the conference. On receiving the award, Dr Boyd commented:

“Focussing on the impacts of GenAI in PhD research supervision, our paper explores how the loci of power and control within the supervisory relationship might change with the use of AI, and the how these effects might be addressed. Receiving the Emerald Publishing Prize for best methodological research is amazing and we were delighted both by the recognition amongst the academic community and for the raised profile of UCEM in this very important area of developing research.”
