UCEM and DiverseCity Surveyors launch mentoring scheme for ethnic minority students

Posted on: 4 March, 2025

University College of Estate Management (UCEM) launched its fourth year of its Widening Participation mentoring scheme collaboration with DiverseCity Surveyors.

This scheme looks to supporting students from ethnic minority backgrounds. Normally mentoring takes place online, but this inaugural and in-person event was hosted at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Head Office in London.

The event commenced with an inspiring talk by Steven Thompson, Senior Specialist – Construction: Professional Practice & Development at RICS, that highlighted the benefits of RICS memberships and the impact collaboration can have on students’ networks.

Attendees were then given a tour of the RICS building, including a visit to the iconic balcony, offering a unique perspective on the historic institution.

Following the tour, participants engaged in a networking session, providing students with the opportunity to connect with experienced professionals and meet their mentors. This interaction will help to foster meaningful relationships that will support students’ professional development and career progression.

As Charlotte Thackeray, Outreach and Inclusion Lead at UCEM, commented:

“Mentoring is crucial as it helps students navigate their academic and professional journeys, providing our students with the confidence and skills they need to succeed. We are also committed to diversifying the built environment, ensuring that it reflects the rich variety of perspectives and talents in our society. A heartfelt thank you to the RICS for hosting us at this event and to our mentors who generously give their time to support our students.”
