UCEM continues gender equality work in Brazil with new grant

UCEM is proud to continue its research work in Brazil with the awarding of £24,990 from the British Council for a new project.

This grant, which follows previous work in the country in 2024, will fund a project titled ‘Empowering Women in Brazilian Higher Education through Violence Prevention and Safe Learning Environments; SafeEduBrazil’.

As Dr Muhamma Rana, who is leading the project and working alongside Prof Angela Lee, notes:

“During the Gender Equality Partnership project, ‘Challenging Prejudicial Attitudes and Structures for Career Equality for Women Graduates in Brazil’, the project team was confronted with alarming evidence of gender-based violence within Brazilian higher education institutions.

“This urgent issue, from pervasive sexual harassment to systemic discrimination, negatively impacts the safety, well-being, and career prospects of women students and graduates, and underscores deeply rooted structural and cultural problems that demand immediate attention.

“The SafeEduBrazil project aims to tackle and reduce violence against women in Brazilian higher education institutions. It will build upon and expand the collaborative partnership between UK and Brazilian institutions established under the previous British Council initiative and introduce innovative approaches for promoting gender equality, driving lasting institutional changes, and fostering cultural connections grounded in shared values.”
