Posted on: 12 September, 2024

UCEM have made a raft of new appointments to its Student Officer roles, and established several new positions in areas like inclusion and social mobility.

Here at UCEM, we aspire to become the world’s most sustainable university and, believe our students are at the heart of our journey to achieve this.

Our Student Officers will lead on and support us to deliver sustainability, EDI and widening participation initiatives, be our critical partner, champion the learner voice and raise awareness of UCEM’s work to our student community and beyond.

We have made several new appointments to our Student Officer positions, as well as establishing new roles with different focuses.

Student Officers for Sustainability

John Owor

Location: Kampala, Uganda
Programme:
MSc Quantity Surveying

During my masters, I completed Sustainable and Innovative Construction module, which both challenged and encouraged me to investigate the concept of sustainability beyond what I knew. I’m currently working in a sector (oil and gas) and many of my previous roles have been in the built environment and construction sector.

I first encountered sustainability in 2014/15, when I was appointed as a Desk Officer for the Energy Building Efficiency in East Africa. The concept of sustainability from the architectural design, choice of material, equipment, technology, and construction methods led me to a new understanding of the Quantity Surveyor’s role in life cycle costing – to ensure that the needs of the present are balanced with those of the future.

The opportunity to serve as a Student Officer for Sustainability gives me the chance to interact with other students beyond my study groups and reflect on sustainability. I’m hopeful that I will gain more insight on the subject of sustainability that I can incorporate into my current working environment. I also hope to share what I have learned and practiced in enhancing sustainability in the built environment and have the opportunity to hone my skills, knowledge, intellect, and confidence in the subject, while inspiring others to follow suit.

Fun fact: I love volunteering and taking on challenges. I’m an ardent field hockey, football, athletics, and cricket fan. On the side-lines, I’m a gardener/landscaper and a spice grocer.

Jake Wright

Location: Wilshire, UK
Programme: BSc Quantity Surveying – Apprenticeship

I have been an apprentice QS for 3 years now, working across Wiltshire, Dorset, Somerset and the Cotswolds. Within my role, I have first-hand experience of some sustainable projects being constructed and provide advice on how to limit waste and reduce costs on projects which boosts the sustainability credentials.

Before UCEM, I was on a panel for sustainability within the school environment and worked with other further education students across Wiltshire on how we can all improve our awareness of sustainability.

Sustainability has never been so important to us as built environment professionals, as well as in our everyday lives. As an apprentice and whilst studying at UCEM, I see first-hand the importance of sustainability on sites, in our office and throughout my university course.

I hope to bring further awareness to students and staff about the importance of sustainability. I would also like to consider and raise awareness that some sustainable options can be impacted depending on if we as a country import materials internationally e.g. if we import solar panels from China, the payback period of renewable energy will never be achieved due to additional CO2 produced in transporting the goods to the UK.

Fun fact: I love going on lots of walks in the countryside and paddleboarding with my girlfriend.

Kian Bruney

Location: Commonwealth of Dominica
Programme:
BSc Quantity Surveying

My associate degree in Architecture ignited my passion for the construction industry, which led me to pursue a BSc in Quantity Surveying at UCEM with plans to become a chartered surveyor. The future of the built environment is rapidly changing, and I strive to make a positive contribution to this rapidly changing sector.

Being involved in the built environment in my country for a few years has allowed me to critically observe the many inefficiencies and environmentally deteriorating practices that are occurring. I applied to become a Student Officer for Sustainability to gain an extensive understanding and appreciation for sustainability practices within this rapidly evolving sector.

Sustainability is of critical importance and I want to be equipped with sufficient knowledge and experience to become a competent advocate for sustainability and environmental preservation at UCEM and within the built environment. Working alongside other like-minded individuals at UCEM is an opportunity I can’t miss out on and I’m excited to begin.

Sustainability should be at the forefront of every sector, and having personal experience of the devastating damage that global warming is having, particularly in my country, it drives me to do my best to contribute towards people and planet.

Fun fact: My interests and skills are far-reaching, encompassing areas such as plumbing, masonry, electricals, A/C and refrigeration, and architectural drafting.

Velile Sabanda

Location: Ireland
Programme:
MBA Construction and Real Estate

I have a robust background in the construction industry spanning over 15 years in South Africa and more recently in Ireland. My expertise lies in estimating and quantity surveying for various project types including commercial, data centres, hospitals,  industrial buildings, and residential estates. I have honed my skills in project management, cost control, and sustainability practices.

My diverse experience equips me with a comprehensive understanding of the built environment and a passion for promoting sustainable practices within the industry. I am eager to leverage my expertise and contribute to initiatives as a Student Officer, driving positive change and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.

I am particularly interested in promoting sustainable practices in the areas of waste reduction and recycling. I believe that waste management is a critical aspect of sustainability that often gets overlooked, yet has a significant impact on the environment.

By focusing on waste reduction and encouraging recycling initiatives, we can help minimize the amount of waste sent to landfills, conserve natural resources, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Being a Student Officer will allow me to make a tangible impact by driving positive change, influencing practices, and encouraging sustainable behaviours among peers.

Student Officer for Women

Ummi Mahinoor

Location: London, UK
Programme:
BSc Real Estate Management

Being an ethnic woman myself, I would like to see more representation of woman in the built environment, especially those from the BAME backgrounds. Being an advocate for women empowerment, I believe there needs to be a change in how women are portrayed in communities. Everyone is powerful and we all have the potential to thrive and reach our dreams. Promoting equality allows everyone to feel valued no matter their gender.

My goal is to contribute to an inclusive, supportive, and equitable environment where everyone regardless of gender, age and background can thrive and succeed. I am confident this can be achieved through supporting women’s mental health and pushing for a community that consists of women in leadership and creating a more comfortable and supportive platform for women to blossom.

Mariana Querido

Location: Texas, USA
Programme: MSc Construction Management

I’m originally from Porto, Portugal but currently living in Houston, Texas. I am currently pursuing my master’s degree and balancing the roles of student, mother of a three-year-old and wife. Transitioning into the construction industry has been a very exciting challenge and upon my graduation I hope to secure a position on a graduate training scheme.

It’s difficult to pinpoint just one area of interest because I’m deeply passionate about sustainability, equity, and inclusion. However, focusing on women’s issues at our university particularly resonates with me. I am committed to advocating for policies that guarantee equal opportunities and empower women to thrive in every aspect of university life. I am enthusiastic about contributing to initiatives that support and amplify women’s voices, thereby fostering a UCEM community where women feel genuinely valued and empowered.

I’m very happy to be taking on the role of Student Officer for women here at UCEM, as I believe in the power of advocacy and community building. My goal is that together we can build an inclusive environment where every woman feels comfortable and confident to voice her ideas and concerns. I look forward to promoting a supportive community that not only values academic success but also prioritizes personal growth and empowerment. By taking on this role, I hope to contribute positively to the experience of all women at UCEM, ensuring they have the resources, support and opportunities they need to thrive.

Fun fact: In my spare time I enjoy reading books, cook, paint and go for long walks.

Student Officer for Disability and Mental Health

Danial Shaikh

Location: London, UK
Programme:
BSc Quantity Surveying (Apprenticeship)

I am currently a Quantity Surveying Degree Apprentice at Mott MacDonald, where I have been working for the past two years. My role involves managing costs and contracts on construction projects, ensuring that they are completed within budget and to the highest standards.

I am deeply interested in the built environment, particularly in how construction can evolve through advancements in technology and sustainability. The integration of innovative technologies, such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) and smart construction methods, has the potential to revolutionize the industry by enhancing efficiency and precision. Additionally, I am passionate about sustainable construction practices that minimize environmental impact and promote resource efficiency. By focusing on green building techniques and renewable materials, we can create structures that are not only functional but also environmentally responsible. This dual focus on technology and sustainability drives my enthusiasm for the field.

As a Student Officer for Disability and Mental Health, I hope to achieve several key objectives. Firstly, I aim to advocate for the needs and rights of students with disabilities and mental health challenges, ensuring they have access to the necessary resources and support at UCEM. I also want to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding these issues within the student community. By fostering an inclusive and understanding environment, I believe we can create a more supportive campus culture. Additionally, I hope to develop initiatives and programs that promote mental well-being and accessibility, ultimately helping all students thrive academically and personally.

Fun fact: Outside of work, I have a keen interest in rugby, which I find to be a great way to stay active and build teamwork skills. Additionally, I am passionate about making a positive impact in the community. One of my long-term goals is to help start a charity that provides work experience opportunities for individuals with Tourette’s Syndrome. I believe that everyone deserves a fair chance to succeed, and I am committed to supporting initiatives that promote inclusivity and equal opportunities in the workplace.

Student Officer for Inclusion

Student Officer for Social Mobility

Drew Greenhalgh

Location: Peterborough, UK
Programme:
BSc Real Estate Management

Prior to working at Savills I was training to become an officer in the Merchant Navy, however I decided to opt for a more home-based career. Having had an interest in the built environment from a young age, it seemed to be a natural decision to progress into the industry.

The programme which is offered to me by my company and the UCEM is what attracted me to the role. Degree Apprenticeships have always been of interest to me, as I see a the opportunity to study while working to be extremely valuable. I am very passionate about the benefits of a Degree Apprenticeship, and I hope to be able to communicate this to potential students as a Student Officer.

As a Student Officer, I hope to gain invaluable experiences and personal growth that will help to shape my future. I look forward to working with diverse groups of people, including current and prospective students, parents, faculty, and members of the community. Furthermore, being an Officer will provide me with the opportunity to give back to the university. I hope to make a meaningful impact through assisting students by sharing my own experiences and knowledge with them.
