In focus: Our nominees for the RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year Awards 2020 – Thomas Scarlett

Three UCEM apprentices and three alumni have been nominated in various categories at this year’s RICS Matrics Young Surveyor of the Year Awards.
In the lead-up to the Awards, we will be profiling each of our nominees. Last week, we shared Apprentice of the Year nominee, Dan Nixon’s story, and this week we share the thoughts of another person in his category, Thomas Scarlett, who completed his studies with us last year…

How did your nomination come about?
“My nomination was put forward as a result of being at the forefront of my company’s digital transformation. I grasped the opportunity to get involved in the incorporation of BIM [building information modeling] models and digital capture.
“This innovative thinking boosted the efficiency of the entire team, reducing cost planning/measurement timescales from weeks to days, allowing the team to concentrate on other aspects of cost management that were of paramount importance to our client.”
Why do you think you were recognised in this way?
“As an Assistant Cost Manager, my managers and the wider team recognised the ideas and innovation I was bringing into the project were beyond the responsibilities expected of me. I also showed leadership skills and confidence when dealing with high level clients, which impressed my mangers and team.”
How did you find studying with UCEM?
“I found studying with UCEM really interesting and beneficial, as this was my first insight into education based around construction and quantity surveying. It created a solid foundation for my further university studies and practical application in the industry. I always found the tutors approachable, understanding and passionate about the material they were teaching.”
What would it mean to you to win the award?
“I am thrilled to have been nominated and shortlisted, as it shows the hard work and dedication to my role has been recognised. To win this award would be my most notable achievement to date in my short career as a quantity surveyor.”
