Overview
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
UCEM’s sustainability vision is driven by the United Nations (UN) definition of sustainability: “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Our sustainability strategy is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are a set of 17 interconnected goals that aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. UCEM is a signatory to the SDG Accord, which is a commitment to advancing sustainability as a higher education institution.
UCEM also stands as the first alternative provider to be a Responsible Futures accredited institution in 2018. The aim of this is to foster our institution-wide commitment to embedding SDGs within both formal and informal curricula.
In addition to mapping out our curricula, we are taking steps to identify the SDGs significant to our other areas of work as well. Below are just some of UCEM’s contributions to the SDGs as we continue to strive to integrate the SDGs into our teaching, research, and operations.
Goal 1
No poverty
The first of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal’s is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere.
Summary of significance of this goal to UCEM:
At UCEM, we take direct action to combat poverty and support those in need. This could range from repurposing old laptops and giving them to staff for their children’s education to donating to charities/ non-profit organisations. We also provide financial support to students, allowing for equal opportunities to access education. Some examples of this include the following:

Goal 2
Zero Hunger
The second of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal’s is about creating a world free of hunger by 2030.
Summary of significance of this goal to UCEM:
UCEM recognises the importance of ensuring access to nutritious food for both staff and students and have implemented specific initiatives to combat food insecurities.
For students, we understand that financial challenges can sometimes impact their ability to afford basic necessities, including food. To support them, we have established a hardship fund specifically designed to provide assistance with essential items.
For our staff, at Horizons, we are committed to promoting sustainable and ethical practices in our hospitality services. Our facilities team offer Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certified items, ensuring that the food provided meets high social and environmental standards. They also organise a series of staff events called ‘Feed me Friday’, which incorporates vegan events and meat-free meals.

Goal 3
Good health and wellbeing
The third of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal’s is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
Summary of significance of this goal to UCEM:
At UCEM, we are dedicated to advancing a supportive environment that promotes physical and mental well-being of both our staff and students.
Some examples include:
- A team of trained mental health first aiders
- A comprehensive mental health strategy
- Providing our staff with access to SilverCloud, a mental health platform with a range of resources
- A dedicated disability and wellbeing team of specialists who offer guidance, support, and resources

Summary of significance of this goal to UCEM:
Sustainable energy practices are a priority for our organisation so we can reduce our environmental impact and promote the transition to clean energy sources.
To achieve this, we purchase ‘green’ energy from renewable sources. We have also installed photovoltaic (PV) panels on Horizons’ roof, harnessing solar energy to generate clean electricity for our operations. This on-site renewable energy production helps to reduce carbon footprint and increase the share of clean energy in our energy usage.
UCEM runs ‘switch off’ campaigns to raise awareness and encourage staff to manage energy use responsibly, both at home and in the building. These campaigns reduce energy consumption and promotes energy efficiency.

Summary of significance of this goal to UCEM:
At UCEM, we have measures put in place to protect and preserve marine ecosystems and we take steps where we can to contribute to this goal.
One way we promote sustainable practices is by providing food provenance in our menus. This allows us to know where food was grown, caught, or raised, meaning we are able to make informed and sustainable choices when it comes to our food.
UCEM also takes small but meaningful actions to support life below water. For instance, we purchase marine-friendly wine for UCEM events and as gifts/ hospitality use.
